Your Questions About Painted Brick Fireplace Colors

Maria asks…
Does anyone know the best way to paint a red brick fireplace a taupe color?
I have a hugh red brick fireplace that’s 23 years old and want to update it by painting it a lighter color to make it appear more modern. I don’t want to ruin it by doing it wrong. Any advise would be appreciated.
Mr. Thin Brick answers:
Well the first thing is don’t ruin your bricks tuck point and enjoy the natural beauty..But if you insist.
Well the first thing is a good primer coat.Use KILZ as primer then after drying use a thick knap roller but don’t paint it like you have to cover it in 1 coat. Unless you have an empty home cover everything with plastic and rent a airless sprayer from your local rental store and spray away,Myself I would use the airless sprayer because of nooks and crannies.

Steven asks…
What colors go with a red brick fireplace?
We r redoing our basement and i was wondering what color we should paint the walls and trim?
Mr. Thin Brick answers:
Anything in the warm neutrals go great, as well as the yellows family. I would go a nice warm tan or so, or a creamy ivory color. If the bricks are distressed I would stick to the lighter colors, but if its fairly dark and red the darker browns and golds are really nice. Consider a lighter shade of your wall color for the trim if your trim is next to the fireplace, like your mantel. Although white is nice….

George asks…
What color can i paint a brick wall? not fireplace brick but the cinder block type.?
I have two walls that are dry wall and one that is a cinder block type wall in my basement, what color can i paint so that the cinder block wont stand out too much.
Mr. Thin Brick answers:
Ohhh, you can paint it any color you want! If you want it to blend in, use the same color that you’re using on the drywall … But keep in mind that the cinderblock is verrryy porous, so you’ll want to use a good primer first. Otherwise, you’ll be using 5 or 6 coats of paint, and it still might not cover.
You can ask at the store where you plan to buy your paint … Tell them what surface you’re planning to cover, and they can advise you. Please don’t skip the priming step … (goes for the drywall, too), because even though it might seem more expensive to buy both primer and paint, it’ll save you $$$ in the long run (you’ll use less paint and get a more even finish). Good Luck on your project!
