Your Questions About Interior Brick Wall Design

Mandy asks…
Mounting TV to brick and routing low voltage cable through wall, I need some knowledge on wall design?
I have a brick fireplace (that is not used) to where I will be mounting a plasma Tv well above. I have figured out where I will make my electrical drop using conduit and romex if possible to create a new plug behind the new Tv location. I also would plan to run my A/V cables through the wall as well and down to my receiver and sound system. My question is; this house was built in 81′, it has a brick fireplace that is about 8′ wide and is bricked off the back wall about 14″. Behind the brick I’m assumin there should be some sort of cavity that I could use to run my wiring? I know I’ll have to contend with brick ties and excess mortar, but does anyone know the actual make up of a interior brick fireplace wall to give me a heads up. I won’t be protruding into the fireplace itself, just the cavity between the brick and the support wall behind.
Mr. Thin Brick answers:
For the sake of weight , i would think the wall will be hollow…try to drill a hole up from the basement…the firebox will rest on a footer but the face should be hollow…

Jenny asks…
what are some words you would use to describle a brick wall in a room design?
im doing a project for an interior design class and i need to identify 3 major textures in the room and say a few words about them.

that is the room i chose,i am talking about the supple leather couch, the glossy cofee table with the rounded edges and the brick wall behind the couch but what adjectives can i use to describe it?
Mr. Thin Brick answers:
Ying and yang (smooth and rough). I can think of many words to describe this room, starting with the brick wall. It has an organic feel, rough, original brick work in a rustic state, that contrasts with the smoothness of the leather couch creating a ying and yang feeling. The room has a contemporary feel to it with a nod to the past, and certainly creates that loft feel with the furnishings, while bringing the room into the present day, it still has a nostalgic feel with the brick wall framed out in drywall and painted a contemporary white. The white coffee table with is clean lines and smooth feel enhances the loft feeling of the room. The stacks of books create a lived in feeling without bringing clutter and gives the room a wonderful lived in feeling while remaining in its contemporary clean loft like state. Ouch! Hope this helps you on your way! Good luck!

Joseph asks…
Interior Design Question?
I just moved in and I love the brick walls in my new apartment.
It is consistent from living room, kitchen to the bedroom.
My question is, my sister who gets the other room insists that it is “OK” to have a different wall design and/ or color to each of the bedrooms or rooms. I disagree. I see houses with different wall colors and i find them inconsistent and less tasteful. Is it acceptable? or a consistent wall color /design is much preferred?
Mr. Thin Brick answers:
Sometimes having a playful mix of different colours and style in a house can actually give you a nice result. Try to build a bit of consistentcy by having none at all.
Anyway, doors to rooms are usually closed most of the time rite? Unless u’re going to replace your partition walls with tempered glass, you’re not going to see the living and your room at the same time.
I have clients who delibrately want me to make each room a totally different feel and touch. Wat matters most is that try to imagine and match the colors first before starting out on ur painting job. It’s advisable to leave the ceiling white or a light colour. It’ll make the house look brighter.
I like brick walls too. I painted mine straw and had a light projected at an angle to bring out the texture in it.

Mr. Thin Brick answers:
Those elements sounded vintage. You can add some modern style if you’d like. For an example, try these links: http://waveavenue.com/profiles/blogs/an-industrial-and-romantic-loft

Carol asks…
What kind of interior design style is that?
The one where walls are unfinished and covered in white paint.. rather raw but beautiful looking… you can tell the brick silouhette but it’s still stylish. I am not finding the right word for it.. help please! Post pic links too if you have any!
It’s not actually… I saw it in Being John Malkovich, where Cusack’s house has that kind of wall… love it!
Mr. Thin Brick answers:
I know what you mean, but can’t think of name either. Is it Venetian Plaster?
