Your Questions About How To Clean Brick Porch

Mandy asks…

How do I clean the floor of an all brick porch (exposed to the outside)?

The porch (brick) looks like there is a lot of dirt and dust from years of not being cleaned. Any suggestions regarding supplies/equipment I need and technique involved will be appreciated (I am not a professional housecleaner).

Mr. Thin Brick answers:

Any good detergent and a stiff brush and a hose…no need for acid…

Thomas asks…

How do I clean masonry mess and grout smears from ceramic tile floor?

We had major renovations recently to include a new covered back porch with brick columns. The porch floor is ceramic. The brick masons left quite a bit of masonry (mortor) mess on the floor from large white smears to chunks of mortor. And the tile guy after applying the grout smeared the grout over the floor but never returned to do the final clean up. Help ! How can we clean this mess and get the tile back to its’ original finish? We have already pressure washed which had no affect at all.

Mr. Thin Brick answers:

I’d go to Home Depo or Lowe’s and ask them what you should do.

David asks…

How to remove bricks safely. I miss aligned them all are stuck and I would like to realign them.?

I have porch with rounder shape designed by bricks. Some bricks were lose. So I tried my self fixing serious of 6 lose bricks applying cement kind of material from Lows . But they are little miss aligned to the level. How to remove these bricks and clean and fix them properly without breaking bricks. I am totally new to this kind of stuff. I should not have done in the first place.. I did it in rush.

Mr. Thin Brick answers:

You can use a chisel and hammer and only hit the mortar but there is no guarantee that the bricks will not break. The good news is most bricks are not too expensive if you do break some. A good case to point out that just because a project can be Do-It-Yourself does not mean that it always should be DIY. Contractors get paid well for a reason.

Donna asks…

Mr. Thin Brick answers:

Try using a scraper and some white vinegar. The acid should help soften it up and you can crape it off with a putty knife of some sort.
