Your Questions About How To Reinforce A Brick Wall

Lisa asks…

How do I hang my 42″ Plasma on an internal dry stud wall??

I want to hang my 42″ Plasma on a dry stud wall in an upstairs bedroom. Behind this is another dry stud wall which one of the walls where the stairs are. Between each of the internal walls is an 8cm cavity. So all I’ve got play with is a couple of studs and plasterboard! Short of ripping the wall down and reinforcing it (is this easy to do? if so how could I do it short of getting a professional in?) what is the best way to hang the tv on the wall.
For info: Immediately below where I want to hang the tv is a double socket and a tv aerial point.
I’m not bad at DIY (have mounted a smaller LCD in another room without any probs – but it was a brick wall), but have never done anything like this so any help is really appreciated.

Mr. Thin Brick answers:

Add some 14.5 inch cross pieces perpendicular to the studs to give you more surface to mount to.

If non-load-bearing, use a powerhammer to join the wall to the floor and deck screws to join to the ceiling josts more sturdily.

Use screw-in steel anchors to mount if anything must miss a stud.

Jenny asks…

How can I reinforce a wall?

My dog just knocked over a section of the wall adjoining our backyard gate in an attempt to get out. :( I hadn’t realized until then exactly how feeble our walls are. Our neighborhood is one of those where all the yards are built with the same style wall for a uniform appearance, so I can’t change the type of wall it is.

The wall doesn’t seem to be real brick at all, it’s almost like a hollowed out concrete made to look thicker and heavier than it is. What can I do to repair this wall and make it stronger without changing it’s appearance (so the homeowner’s association will still be happy)?

Seriously, a tall chain link fence would probably be stronger than this wall and more efficient at containing the dog. I don’t have that option though.

Need specific mmorts, don’t offer me mmo websites,it won’t help me?

New generation MMORTS who is browser based do not interest me.I want an mmorts who would have following:1.Ability to spy other players(espionage)-tell theirs resource’s quantity, technologies, buildings, troops etc…2.Player power would be counted by troops amount, and troops power+amount by points-for example,i recruited a knight and i got +7pts,i recruit 2 archers i got +4pts,in one week i recruited many troops so my pts would be 200,if i lost some of troops my pts dropped to 150,i lost all troops, my pts is 0 again.3.Also i want normal world map, where i could see my own castle, neighbours castles, enemies castles, friends castles etc.Castles outlook(in world map) should be upgraded following in this style:i have 27pts-my castle should be low, small,i have-153pts my castle now is builded by bricks, strong wall,i have 473 pts-my castle is high with double reinforced walls, perfect looking walls.Opponent destroyed my all troops-my 0pts-castle looking like tent again.4.Ability to attack other player is a must. But every attack must have some consequences-i attacked enemy castle,i destroy his troops, demolished some buildings, stolen rescources,So pillage/plunder is needed.I wish killing enemy troops should be rewardable, for example extra rescources, hero experience,or ability to clain something special for your empire.5.Technologies should be upgradeable and very valuable, for example- i have 3lvl black smith technology-i can recruit armoried peasants,i got 6lvl blacksmith-i can recruit knights,i got 11lvl blacksmith-i can recruit mounted cavalry.Im upgrading espionage tech-i get more info from other castles,i upgrade raiding technology,my army marching much faster.6.Possibility to expand territory is ok-for example capture enemy towns or build new town, but it should be very limited,i dont want fullfilled world map where one person have 10towns,1-3town per person. 7.F2P
Additional info-i dont care very much about graphic,i just need have basic graphis,to see how looks my castle, inside and outside,to see troops, just dont need to be writted like on paper and thats all(like in most browser based games).
Games i tried: World of battles-dont liked, Saga-liked a bit, Empires II online-(most similar i described) liked most.I will not be angry if some of my request’s will not fit, but i want something very close.

How do you properly reinforce basement block walls ?

My house is about 50 years old. The basement walls are made of concrete blocks. There is a horizontal crack going the whole length of the front wall. Through research, I was informed by more than one source that the best fix was to drill holes outside, below the brick, install rebar, then fill with a high strength concrete every 2-3 feet or so. I have hired a contractor to do this. He has drilled the holes outside but will not come back and finish the work nor return my calls. I want to finish this project myself and was looking for advice from someone who has done this. What type of rebar, concrete(psi), and how to approach it? It is also winter time. I greatly appreciate any help.

Mr. Thin Brick answers:

The re-bar is steel rod that has a raised spiral pattern on it. This is to keep it from twisting in the concrete. It usually comes in 4 to 20 foot lengths. It will depend a lot on where you buy it. A simple hack saw will cut it. The longer lengths will be cheaper to buy, but more cumbersome to haul. You will also need a fairly heavy wire to keep them in position as the concrete is poured in. For get the contractor, and only pay for the work he has done. A high strength concrete, about 5000 psi would be your best bet. As for the time of year, I’d wait for spring when ground temperatures will be above 32 degrees. If you do it now, you’ll need some way to keep the concrete warm as it cures. Keep the top surface of the concrete moist as it cures. This will help it achieve it’s best strength.

My dog keeps breaking out of his crate and I don’t know what to do!?

I have a nine month old, 45 lb siberian husky mix named Bo. Whenever I leave the house, I crate him because he chews up everything, has potty mishaps and still gets into scuffles with our other australian shepherd. He has learned how to break out of his crate and let himself out of my room. This is a bit plastic travel crate. I already tried a wire kennel which he broke out of almost immediately so I exchanged it for this crate. I was told by the staff at Petsmart that it was virtually escape-proof. However, with Bo, it is not.

I don’t know how I could reinforce it with padlocks or something and I’m scared to. I don’t want him to get stuck and suffocate. He is quite the Houdini, already starting to figure out how to open the glass sliding door for our backyard. We have 8 foot chainlink fences and a big brick wall but I’m afraid he’ll even get out of the backyard. I thought about buying a huge outdoor kennel and hotwiring it (that’s what my friend does with her pit bull) but I’m afraid he’ll get out. I like to keep him in the house but if it’s a better option, I’m open for it. Bo is actually crate trained but he hates it and does not want to go in. I’ve only had him for a couple of weeks, his previous owners abused him and starved him. He’s putting on weight and does well at dog parks already but I just can’t manage to keep him contained when I’m at work and my roommate isn’t home.

I looked into doggy day care but I don’t want to have to pay for daycare every time I leave the house. I have already committed to walking him two hours before work and coming hom during my lunch break to let him out in the backyard. Once I tried leaving Bo out loose in the house and he actually did well, didn’t destroy anything or pee or poop. The problem with that is we leave our other dog out and about as well but they still fight. My roommate refuses to lock up her dog so I don’t really have that option. I need some ideas on how to keep him contained. I don’t know what to do. Please help!
No offense guys but I’m actually looking for advice and ideas about how to contain my dog during the day (i.e. crate, kennel, daycare, etc), NOT random comments about getting a dog trainer or a welcome to the world of huskies. I know what huskies are about, I’ve done my homework. I just need some more ideas about how to contain my dog without him escaping.
and rrb, try putting a husky in a simple kennel outside and see how he stays in there… It really isn’t that simple.
