Your Questions About How To Remove White Stains From Brick

Chris asks…
I need to Know how to remove white calcium stains from dark brick and multi-colored flagstone?
Mr. Thin Brick answers:
Efflorescence is a white powdery substance that can often stain brick. These efflorescence brick stains are caused by deposit of salts. The mortar used to construct your brick wall has a fairly high amount of salt.
To clean efflorescence brick stains, use a stiff bristled brush and water. Scrub the area and the stain should clean off the brick. If the stains are heavy, you can use a general household cleaning solution.
If these efflorescence brick stains continue to return, this may be a sign that water is entering the wall due to a defect, water line leakage, or poorly installed flashing. Take action to prevent potential damage to your masonry.
I believe this is what you are describing. I will link to a “How To” article I wrote on How to Clean Brick Stains. It has photos of different kinds of stains and methods for cleaning. Take a look and I hope this helps.

Be careful using a power washer as you are likely to cause damage to the brick that is beyond the current cosmetic damage.

Pressure washing stains on brick. How to get them off?
I have a brick house and have pressure washed the exterior to clean the brick. However, there are spots around the windows and below the siding that will not come off. They are from the white, chalky residue from the siding above the brick. Anyone have experience with removing this? Should I try a solution or is there a brick cleaner that will get this off?

How do I remove tile from my stairs?
I am in the process of closing on my first home. I love it, except for the steps going to the upstairs. The previous owner stained the top of the step and added white square tiles to the front of the steps to look like bricks. It was a poor job and was not 100% completed. The tiles are glued directly to the wood and were never grouted so we want to remove them and lay carpet instead.
What is the easiest way to remove the tiles and are there any magic tools out there to make it go any faster?
Mr. Thin Brick answers:
There isn’t going to be any easy way to do it, unfortunately. It’s going to require patience, muscle and time. Position a chisel or wide scraper so that it can slip in between the back of the tile and the wood of the stair riser and start pounding on it’s handle with a hammer, using downward strokes. Please be sure to wear goggles to protect your precious eyes, and work gloves to protect your hands from cuts. Good luck!
